Rear Spindle Work

Bearing Removed
Bearing Removed
New Bearing Installed
I had decided to replace the original 2.5" half shafts with the 3" ones that were used on later Corvettes. While I had the half shafts off I decided it was a good time to have the rear bearings checked out and replaced. Like all projects to date this one took a lot longer than it should have. Some of the bolts that held the half shaft flanges to the spindle had been rounded off. I am starting to think that the previous owner had a single adjustable wrench in his tool box and nothing else. After spending a couple hours drilling and cutting through this bolt with a dremel I finally got the half shafts off. Then it was on to removing the bearing carrier and assembly. This job was just as tough as the carriers were rusted to the trailing arm assemblies. This was my first time working on a vehicle without a solid rear axle so it was a great learning experience too. Once I removed the old assemblies I ordered new ones. the install prcedure went well, right up unto the point of having to install the parking brake. This was pretty tough to do with the spindle already installed. This is when I discovered that the parking brake cable was rusted in place on the one side. Might be the reason it never held well. So that got replaced too.
